In less than 24 hours I did something that would normally take a couple weeks. If you read my !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , then you know that I’m a bachelor for the week. This is the reason for my pace.

Kinja'd!!!

I forgot to take an initial pic, but in case you’re wondering it looked like a larger pile of wood before I built that first box

Anyway, I made all of the cuts I had planned for the workbench. Quickly entertained my parents for dinner. Then got to drilling all of the pocket holes and assembling. PSA: if you build things with wood and don’t have a pocket hole joiner...you are missing out.

This dog will not leave my side

I finished everything but the Masonite tops. Even after measuring so carefully the top came out just a little crooked. So I sank a screw in the center and removed all of the surrounding screws, adjusted, set with a few new screws, then sank all the old ones back in. It also turned out taller than I intended, however I have to cut and brace for the casters I’m going to add, so I will fix that then.

After that I decided to do a quick cleanup of the shop and snap some pics. It fits perfectly where I pictured it, and it will be super useful, especially once it’s on wheels. I might close the bottom, and put doors on too.

Anyway pics if ya like.

One for drilling holes, one for sinking screws

Those pieces of wood off to the left are what I used to secure the top after I measured it. those pieces aren’t perfectly straight, and neither was my top when I first turned it over...How about that?

I bought a custom pre-hung door when we first bought the house as there was no door to this room. I never “finished” it. So I took the door and hardware off. Trimmed up the frame, patched and painted. Now I just have to paint the door and put it back together. The piece of wood is a threshold that I made for the void that remains from the wall I removed the last time my wife was away. It needs a couple of coats of poly yet.

Everytime you show a pic of your workshop I am jealous. Mine looks like a bunch of shit stacked as high as possible.

I did just speak to the iron worker on a job I am on an d he is going to get me a 2'x4' piece of 1/2" plate steel for a new welding table I am building. I can’t wait to get it finished. The legs are already welded and ready to go. It will be really nice to have a steel table that is big enough to weld on.  Though it won’t help me to get anywhere near as organized as you are!

Damn, you are organized! My shop(s) would drive you crazy, though I stand by the garage being a hot mess for now as I try to finish wiring it and get it drywalled. Also good call on the pocket screw jig, I need to pick one up, but they are so dang expensive, I’m waiting to find one at a yard sale or estate sale, or just go on sale.

Your second workbench looks great and I think you’re right, on casters it will be really handy. I built basically the same work bench as your first one when we first moved into the house. It’s my downstairs workbench for small stuffs, electronics, and also my reloading bench. I love the screen in yours, I’m not that fancy, but I do have an arm on the side to hold a tablet and I mounted a small stereo to it (on shock mounts because mechanical/ acoustics engineer!).

One thing I did that I’m proud of is I made my bench modular by doing a 2 layer top - plywood bottom and MDF on top. Then I drilled 2 sets of 6 holes on the top and sank some T-nuts into the underside. I mounted my reloading press, case trimmer, a vise, etc. on hunks of 2x12 that have also been drilled with the same 6 hole pattern (I made a plywood jig so I can make more in the future). That way I can swap out tools and repurpose my bench easily.

Also, good call on the Lee press.  I have an RCBS Rock Chucker, but I always buy Lee dies, they are the best!

That is awesome. Even though my press is bolted directly to the bench, it’s still a little wobbly. I think I’m going to put threaded holes in the movable bench for it and the drill press. I’m very new to reloading. I only reload 45 ACP at this point. I learned on 9mm and realized that it’s just as cheap to buy as it is to make...I haven’t gotten advanced enough to deal with the taper, trimming, and lube needed for 5.56 etc... What I don’t have is a laundry/utility tub! That has put a huge damper on reloading because it’s so hard to rinse my tumbler in the kitchen sink. I don’t want to do it out in the yard because we have dogs, chickens, and a duck.

I have to do a lot in a pretty small space, that combined with being a nutjob is why it’s so organized. Mainly the ladder.

Thanks! I’m always looking to add, but I’m running out of space.

Thanks! Welding is my next endeavor. Right now, I just don’t have a place to do it. I desperately need a garage and that is in the works, but may not be for a while.

If you want threaded holes, sink some T-nuts in, trust me, it works great. I use those things   on everything where appropriate. I had no idea they existed until a couple years ago, now I love them because they solve so many problems. I sunk them into the stakes on my trailer - now rather than needing a nut and bolt to bolt the sides in, I just run a long bolt in that goes through the stake pocket hole, the stake, threads through the T-nut, and then goes through a hole in the trailer frame. Saves so much time!

One thing to be careful of, you can’t torque them too hard in MDF, they will tear it up, but on the plywood of the small bench they should be great. I’ll try to get some pictures tonight of my rig so you can check it out.

I wash my brass in an aluminum roasting pan I got from the grocery store for like $1. I don’t reload pistol at all, as you said 9mm isn’t really economical, and I don’t shoot enough other pistols to really justify getting into it. Currently I reload 5.56mm and . 300 Win Mag. I reload for precision, not volume, so I’m usually only doing 50-100 rounds, maybe 200, at a time. I like Sierra 69 gr MatchKings for 5.56mm - I worked up a load for a buddy that’s shooting dime size groups out of his 18" stainless match barrel. I also have an awesome 300 Win Mag load using Hornady 208 gr ELD-Ms over a whole lot of Retumbo powder. Those things are amazing, like little cruise missles. I was drilling steels out at 1,100 yards with them out of my Howa.

It’s a really fun hobby and once you get the hang of it, it’s not overly hard. Most of the wor k is in the prep. I just bought a horizontal band saw that I hope to be able to set up tonight after work. I just have a Ho bart Handler 140 which is a nice machine for a hobbyist.
